Leeds Recycling & Energy Recovery Facility

Leeds Recycling & Energy Recovery Facility (RERF)

The Leeds Recycling & Energy Recovery Facility is the largest timber structure of its kind in Europe, standing at 42m high and 150m wide.

The building was designed by the internationally renowned architect, Jean-Robert Mazaud of S’pace Architects. Amongst it's key features are:

  • A main building that is approximately 42m high (for comparison the Leeds Civic Hall is 52m) with a slimline 75m chimney.
  • An innovative building based upon the use of glass and timber framing;
  • A green ‘living’ wall to the southern façade to enhance the visual impact and provide a home for biodiversity,  the green wall is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Richard documented this iconic building's construction and, prior to its official opening, was invited by the architects to photograph the facility and provided images for the visitor centre.
